I have been asked this question many times. The simple answer is to feel better so I can do better!
I first started practicing Yoga because I had back pain. After many months of regular pract ice the pain was gone and I felt stronger. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I slept better, I felt calmer and more clear headed. I was intrigued.
What is in this 'Yoga' that can do all of that?
So I started searching... I started reading & meditating. Then one day while meandering at the local library I found translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Swami Satchidananda. I was astounded! I asked myself, “Why doesn't everyone know this?” In the Yoga Sutras I found the answers to questions I didn't even know how to ask. Questions like how to know the Whole Self: body, mind & spirit. But most importantly, I learned to see the interconnectedness of all things and how I fit into this picture.
Many people hear the word Yoga and think of a trendy form of exercise that involves twisting oneself into a pretzel. While the postures are a delicious part of Yoga, the jewel is in the teachings. Yoga offers more than just something to do on a mat. It offers a comprehensive system for living and an understanding of the big picture.
Through the science of Yoga I've learned to see the other as myself. To speak my voice and be compassionate at the same time. I’ve learned to listen better, to be kinder and gentler, to take less and give more, to love without restraint, and to simply enjoy life! According to Samkhya, the Philosophy on which Yoga is based, Life is for Enjoyment and Upliftment. Now that is a philosophy I can live by!
Why do you practice Yoga?
