I started the 10 day Metabolic
Detoxification Program because I have always struggled with acne and digestive
problems. Also, I have always wondered
if I have intolerance to certain foods, and have avoided thinking about the
fact that I may be because I love ALL food groups. I have never been interested in doing a
cleanse, because most of the ones I have seen are an all liquid diet. I personally feel that not having a balanced
diet is very unhealthy and I am not willing to do that to my body. When I learned about the Metabolic
Detoxification program I was intrigued to learn more, because it appeared you
actually ate a lot of food and took a lot of nutritional supplements. Plus, you take out certain food groups and
then slowly introduce them back into your diet to see if you have an
intolerance. Amanda Shipe, Certified
Holistic Health Coach and CEO of Mind Your Body Oasis, met with me and
explained the program and answered all of the many questions I had. I decided to bite the bullet and do it. I was worried about my ability to follow this
program, because I am a foodie. I love
to cook and bake, as well as eat all foods!
What I decided to do was start the program on a Tuesday, so that I would
be finished the following Thursday and only have to go through one weekend of a
strict diet (and I was on-call that weekend for work anyway, so I couldn’t do
anything too wild).
Here is a list of food I was able
to eat all days; Apples, Pears, Avocado, Cruciferous vegetables, Raw Greens,
Beans, Peas, Hummus, Wild Caught Fish, Water, Herbal Tea, Vinegar, Oils, and
herbs and spices. The first two days and
the last day I was able to add more food to my diet; Rice, Oats, Nuts,
Unsweetened milk alternatives, chicken, and turkey.
On Day 1 I was excited and nervous,
but there was not much different from my regular routine. I was able to eat all of the foods listed
above, which is typical for my usual diet.
Although, before my soccer game that night, I missed my usual coconut water
I have before exercising. It was not a
craving, but a habit that I looked forward to.
Day 2 was my most difficult
day. I started taking the powder and
pill supplements. I had a horrible
headache that started in the morning. I
would usually take Ibuprofen, but I did not want to ruin my detox. The headache got worse and worse as the day
went on. I decided to try to do my Hot
Vinyasa yoga class, and after the first 20 minutes or so I could not do one
more downward facing dog because the blood kept rushing to my aching head and I
had to leave the class. I have never had
to leave a class, but I just couldn't make it through.
Day 3 I wanted carbs more than
anything! My mind automatically thought,
“Oh no, does this mean I have an intolerance to carbohydrates?” I was also experiencing a very dry mouth, and
I always drink a lot of water throughout the day but probably drank double this
day.
Days 4, 5, 6 I felt very good and
vibrant! I had a lot of energy and was
ready to conquer the world!
Day 7 I was aggravated. I wanted to eat whatever I wanted. I was tired of eating the same foods over and
over again. “I never want to look at
another bean or piece of fish again!” I
just kept reminding myself, only a few more days. You are almost done! You made it this far, don’t give up!
Day 8 I was very hopeful, because
Day 9 is the last day of the strictness and then on Day 10 you can begin
reintroducing things.
On Day 9, after my Hot Vinyasa yoga
class it was time to celebrate. Well, I
only celebrated by having a PostModern Foods cheesecake. However, it was my first time having PostModern
Food and it was an amazing experience! I
am now going to try to make mostly Raw Food desserts, because they are SO much
better for you and have the potential to taste almost exactly like the real
thing! I have already tried two recipes
on my own!
On Day 10 I started sneezing, I had
itchy red eyes, and my nose was runny. I
had reintroduced almonds on Day 9, and whey protein powder this morning in my
smoothie. Again, “Oh no, does this mean
I have an intolerance to one of these things?”
I took almonds out of my diet and
kept the protein powder in. I had no
other experiences of allergy symptoms.
After a couple of days I had almonds again and still did not have any allergy
symptoms. As I introduced the other food
groups back into my diet I had no problems and was quiet relieved. Many of you may be wondering if I lost any
weight. I did not start this journey to
lose weight, but I did lose four pounds.
Since then, because I love cheese and nuts and those are fatty, I have
gained those few pounds back. But that’s
a bargain I am willing to make to continue eating cheese and nuts.
I want to thank Amanda Shipe for
encouraging me to take this journey and supporting me every step of the
way. When I had questions, I emailed her
and she promptly emailed me a response.
This was an interesting journey and I am proud of myself for getting
through it.
