We are happy to announce the student of the month for August!
"Yoga has taught me how
to be centered and calm. The thing I love about yoga is that we set our
intentions every time we come to our mats. I have two main mantras that I
meditate on when there isn't anything specific that come to my mind right away…
the first isbalance. Not just the balance in my asanas and trying
not to fall out of dancer, but balance in all aspects of my life. Working
hard, playing hard, spending time with friends and being alone to be in my own
head. This mantra has kept me going in this crazy and hectic world
especially since I've only moved here less than a year ago. The second
mantra is let it go (No, its not from Frozen, although I loved
that movie and song when I heard it..) I love everything that this stands for.
A lot of the time, when something crazy happens to throw me off, I react
in such a dramatic way and I am reminded that I need to let it go.
Let go of attachment to a comment that I over heard someone say about me,
let go of the attachment to my appearance, let go of people who might not be a
positive influence in my life. Sometimes I let my mind become fixated on
a two minute situation that I cannot change. I need to learn to feel it,
accept it, and let it go. This is something I am constantly working on, and
yoga helps me to meditate on it and centers me" ~Brianne Wong
We are thrilled to announce that Brianne Wong has been selected as the Student of the Month for August! Brianne is a very special member of the MYBO family and we love seeing her bright smile daily!
A little about Brianne:
Brianne moved to DC from NJ to work as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton supporting government clients as a cost analyst.
Her hobbies include lots of yoga (of course!), spending time with friends and just enjoying life and the opportunities that she has access to in the city!
Family is very important to Brianne, she is the second of four children and has a large extended family. Her dad is one of six and her mom is one of seven. She has 23 first cousins and wouldn't have it any other way!

Motivation to practice yoga:
Brianne loves the way yoga makes her mind, body and spirit feel. Not only it is it her only form of exercise but it helps her reduce stress. Brianne used to be cheerleader for 13 years so she gets to use yoga to replace her desire for stunting with learning how to increase her flexibility and strength with cool yoga tricks. Brianne discovered yoga during her study abroad experience in New Zealand. She was able to attend classes once a week and when she returned to the states she sought out local yoga studios and groupon deals. It wasn't until she graduated and moved to VA that she was able to join MYBO and made yoga a daily practice.
With regular practice, Brianne is able to notice something new in her yoga practice weekly. She has also noticed that it's not just the asanas that are rewarding to her body, but she sleeps better and am more motivated to treat my body with respect by feeding it the best food she can find.

Yoga advice:
"YES, DO IT. That would be my first reaction… then I would probably start listing off all the reasons why it is beneficial. My second piece of advise would be to try more than one class and more than one teacher and more than type of yoga and try it in and out of a hot room. There as so many aspects to yoga and each teacher and type of yoga have their own unique flare. The next piece of advise would be to not be intimidated by other people in the room. When I first started yoga, I could help but feel a little jealous of all the people that could do all the crazy arm balances and inversions. Okay, I'll take that back… I was a lot jealous. But with time, patience and practice I was able to build up to it. Yes, there are some people who can get it on their first try, and we can secretly be envious of them, but the journey to achieving something is more rewarding because you worked so hard toward it. It took me months to be able to do crow, and one day it just clicked! It also took me about a year to be able to even do a headstand without flipping over onto my back."
