June Student of the Month

Congratulations to June's Student of the Month: Anna Schwoch

A little bit about Anna: Anna is originally from Madison, Wisconsin and moved to DC several years ago after living in Cape Verde (West Africa) while serving for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. She works at the Department of Homeland Security and challenges herself personally and professionally by practicing yoga regularly, riding her bike, reading, traveling, and taking random classes, currently it’s tennis lessons through the Arlington Parks and Rec Department.

Anna's perspectives on her yoga practice: I did the 90-day challenge and seeing how much I improved during such a short period of time just by being consistent in my practice was really encouraging to me. Sometimes after a long day at work, the last thing I want to do is go and work out, but if I remind myself how good I feel after the classes and focus on that instead of how tired I am, it’s enough to get me to class…and once I’m at the studio, I’m always happy I’m there! Physically I’m a lot stronger and more flexible than I was when I started yoga, but the biggest benefits have probably been mental. Yoga classes force me to focus on what I’m doing; they’re the one time when my mind isn’t on full speed.

Anna's Advice:  Definitely try as many different types of classes and teachers as you can! Everyone has different styles and finding teachers and classes that match what you need makes a big difference.

The most effective thing to stay calm and centered in our hectic world isBreathing. Staying true to who I am. Reminding myself that some days are going to be harder than others and sometimes it’s the most difficult things that are the most rewarding.
