June Student of the Month

Congratulations to June's Student of the Month: Anna Schwoch

A little bit about Anna: Anna is originally from Madison, Wisconsin and moved to DC several years ago after living in Cape Verde (West Africa) while serving for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. She works at the Department of Homeland Security and challenges herself personally and professionally by practicing yoga regularly, riding her bike, reading, traveling, and taking random classes, currently it’s tennis lessons through the Arlington Parks and Rec Department.

Anna's perspectives on her yoga practice: I did the 90-day challenge and seeing how much I improved during such a short period of time just by being consistent in my practice was really encouraging to me. Sometimes after a long day at work, the last thing I want to do is go and work out, but if I remind myself how good I feel after the classes and focus on that instead of how tired I am, it’s enough to get me to class…and once I’m at the studio, I’m always happy I’m there! Physically I’m a lot stronger and more flexible than I was when I started yoga, but the biggest benefits have probably been mental. Yoga classes force me to focus on what I’m doing; they’re the one time when my mind isn’t on full speed.

Anna's Advice:  Definitely try as many different types of classes and teachers as you can! Everyone has different styles and finding teachers and classes that match what you need makes a big difference.

The most effective thing to stay calm and centered in our hectic world is: Breathing. Staying true to who I am. Reminding myself that some days are going to be harder than others and sometimes it’s the most difficult things that are the most rewarding.

YOGA POSES FOR ANXIETY

Everyone deals with it to some degree. For some of us, anxiety can creep up and throw us into a state of panic or allow it to affect the rest of our lives and decision making. If you turn to yoga as a way to exercise a mind, body, and spirit connection, you are familiar with how the practice grounds us, allows us to release pain, anxious thoughts, and conflict. However, there are some poses in particular that can specifically help you target your anxiety and deliver you back to a space of inner peace and calm.

Child’s Pose
One of the most fundamental poses in the practice, child’s pose allows us to take rest and regroup in between some of the more challenging poses, but it is also one that can be performed in any space at any time. The pose allows us to focus in on the rhythm of our breaths, relieve pressure from the neck, shoulders, and back, and calm the nervous system.

Begin the pose by positioning yourself on your hands and knees. Slowly fold your upper body back and allow your torso to rest on your thighs, while letting out a smooth exhale. Give your back a nice long stretch by keeping your arms outstretched in front of you body as you rest your sit bones on your heels. Stay in this space for as long as you need to regroup and refocus.

Viparita Karini or Inverted Lake
By simply resting your legs against the wall with arms outstretched, and spreading your back muscles against the floor, you can alleviate a tremendous amount of stress on the body. This pose also helps to reinvigorate your circulation and bring you back into the present moment. This pose is also known for relieving menstrual cramps and depression, improving digestion, and improving issues with the eyes and ears.

While doing this pose, be sure to rest the back of your legs, from your heels to the sit bones, against the wall. Leave a slight bend in the knees to avoid locking. A towel or two can also be used to support your lower back. Be sure to bring your awareness to you slow, steady inhales and exhales.

Headstands or Shirshasanas
Headstands are extremely effective in moving blood and oxygen throughout the body to the brain and can deeply alleviate anxiety. This pose helps to flush out the adrenal glands which can help to create more positive thoughts as well. This pose takes practice, but because it is a challenge to our minds and bodies, it allows us to shift our focus immediately to the present and away from anxious thoughts.

Beginners can use a wall to practice the shirshasana, however, we can arrive at this pose from a number of ways. One way is to begin with a wide-legged forward bend with your toes turned in slightly. Interlace your fingers in a double fist and place them behind your head as you slowly bend forward. Raise your legs slowly over your head, while maintaining your breath. Your head and hands should act as a tripod base as you flex your core muscles.

Whether you are advanced or a beginner, these three poses can be performed anywhere and can immediately help quell negative feelings and thoughts. Next time, you feel the anxiety creeping up, take a moment and use your body and breath as the vehicle for self soothing.

For more information on ways to strengthen your practice, visit www.mindyourbodyoasis.com or call 703-567-1290. Class schedules are available online as well.

HOT HATHA YOGA TEACHER TRAINING

Yoga Teacher Training continues at MYBO, and our summer session is about to heat up!

We pun, but we're dead serious about teacher training. This course is set to teach yogis, current, and future teachers the intricacies of Hot Hatha practice. It is designed to not just cover the basics of teaching a class, but to dive deep into topics like nutrition, class etiquette, and pose variation, to help participants to truly immerse themselves in this life-changing practice.

MYBO’s Master Teacher, Soozie Kinstler, designed this series for yoga teachers and yoga students who may take future MYBO Flow Teacher Training. These courses are for those who have practiced (and love!) the Bikram style, but may be looking for a new challenge, in both their practice and teaching.

Please note that there are some prerequisites to this course, including 3-6 months of solid yoga practice. If you have any questions, please ask one of our team members, we'd love to tell you more!

MAY STUDENT OF THE MONTH

We are happy to announce our student of the month: Kristen Cornett

A little bit about Kristen: She is originally from Richmond, VA and graduated with MA Honors in Economics from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. Professionally, Kristen analyzes security, development, and civil society issues in northeastern Nigeria and northern Cameroon. Her hobbies include reading, writing, collecting cookbooks, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, travel, and foreign languages. She is also passionate about nutrition and wellness as well as culinary adventures

You may not know that: Kristen played for a US National volleyball team in high school.

Kristen's advice and perspectives: I think yoga is a great combination of mental and physical strength training. It offers me a dedicated time for peace and reflection (a welcome break during my regularly intense work days). I originally came to yoga for the stretching, but ended up staying for the meditation and nuggets of wisdom from the MYBO teachers!

The hot yoga sessions have really become my cup of tea! The majority of my yoga sessions are hot yoga sessions – my hair and skin have never been happier. My balance has also vastly improved. I am also able to take the peace cultivated on my mat in a yoga class out into the rest of my day. A bad day in the hot room is far better than a mediocre day anywhere else.

Yoga isn't just for contortionists and meditation gurus! Many people who give yoga a chance come to learn that the benefits reaped extend well beyond improved physical flexibility. For me, yoga is first and foremost breath and presence. When is the last time you gave yourself the opportunity to just Be?

The most effective thing to stay calm and centered in our hectic world is: Being mindful of breath, and enjoying the little things (especially outdoors). This spring has been really inspiring with its manifestations of new life – bright new blossoms, verdant lawns, sunshine, playful breezes. They are nice reminders that there is a whole world outside of that which occasionally or regularly causes us stress or worry.

#MYBOCHALLENGE UPDATE

The first MYBO Challenge finished up at the end of March, and we're overwhelmed with how many of you have approached us to tell you the changes it has helped you make in your personal health and wellness journey. We initially came up with the idea to help some of our studio friends boost their New Year's resolutions, but here we are in May and it's still helping them do good for themselves.

In fact, it was such a good idea that we're doing it again! You may have seen the fliers or our newsletter announcing that we started a new 30/60/90 day challenge this month. There's still time to get 30 or 60 straight days of yoga or Pilates in for a chance to win fabulous prizes. Plus we've got a great special offer this month membership packages, to help you get as many classes in as you want and need to feel good.

One of our students who graciously shared her journey with us has this to say about the challenge:

"The most rewarding part of the challenge has been revealing in how strong my body is and helping my body rediscover that strength. I made the 30 Day Challenge and, while not quite meeting the 60 Day one, I got 60 classes in 77 days!

The hardest aspect was getting out of bed to make the 6 a.m. classes. Amazingly enough, though, this turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of the challenge.

Other highlights included Neen sharing an insightful reflection each morning that resonated all day, meeting all the new first-time-to-the studio students (as a student of the month, I felt it was incumbent upon me to make newcomers feel welcome), and hugs! Lots and lots of hugs! I achieved my first crow (with an assist by Ms. Kunkle), and practiced with the first teacher-trainer graduates, watching watched them develop their style, confidence, and presence. I loved Sunday nights with Todd (and the other 48 of his groupies), and meeting and practicing with Victor—next year in Tulum, for sure!

Acceptance, gratitude, contentment countered with growth—these are just some of the most rewarding parts of the Challenge. Can’t wait for the 2016 one!"

Guest Post: Things I’ve Found Along The Way—My Fantastic 42 Day Journey

Be was wonderful enough to share her recent personal challenge and journey with us, and we're so thankful she did! If you're ready to begin your own, head on over to the MYBO Challenge and sign up! You'll get updates, discounts, and chances to win fabulous prizes...just our little way of helping you start 2015 off right!

On September 29, I began a forever journey. I call it a forever journey because there is no final destination in yoga. It’s a practice that grows, and goes when you truly surrender to all it has to offer to every part of your being.

Intuition told me that yoga was the right way for me to regain joint mobility and strength. And more importantly, to regain confidence in a body that had danced professionally, carried me through 22 years of event planning (more than 100 weddings, 3 presidents, a handful of celebrities, and lots of corporations and associations in Washington, DC) and successful single parenthood. I had just married my soul mate... and then lost total confidence in my physical self. There were days I couldn't hold a sheet of paper firmly in my fingers nor get out of a chair without my husband’s help.

I contracted West Nile Virus, September 12, 2012. It was debilitating and scary and confusing. No one knew it would wreak havoc in my life like it did. I suffered emotionally and physically through many forms of treatment as the aftermath period mimicked rheumatoid arthritis, and then CLL Leukemia. I stopped working. I am on my second career now as a writer and blogger and that’s how I came to “The Challenge.” I am rebuilding.

The environment at MYBO spoke to me, everything about it just felt right. I formed an accountability team comprised of my husband, my daughter, and a couple down the hall that are 2 of the most fit women I know and good friends. I informed them all of my intentions and asked for their support. I also asked them to hold me accountable to my goals–which they all have done.

I carry a little book with me everyday to class, "1,001 Pearls of Yoga Wisdom (Take your Practice Beyond the Mat)", by Liz Lark, and in it I wrote, “On September 29, 2014, I challenged myself to integrate yoga into my life forever by committing to 42 consecutive days of hot or warm classes at MYB Oasis, Crystal City, VA. I shall be complete on November 9, 2014–but it’s only the beginning. Be…." It was day 18 when I wrote that. I was sore every day back then, in a good and healthy way. I felt as if my body was waking up from hibernation and feeling alive again. I knew it would be hard work. I also know that most things worthwhile, involve hard work and total dedication.

Days 1 through 7, I would wake up around 3 a.m. every morning and groan when I tried to turn over. And then I would spend the moments falling restfully back to sleep, thinking of reasons not go to class. There were mornings when I actually cried on my husband's shoulder. “What was I thinking doing something crazy like 42 days of hot yoga?” and he would dust me off and send me out the door with encouraging words. On October 8th, day 10, he just said, “have courage” in his lovely British accent; that was my last morning crying. But I’d still wake up thinking of creative reasons not go every morning for a while longer. The three beautiful, strong women in my accountability circle would cheer me on every Monday (Mondays are still the hardest) with kind messages. And the kind, knowledgeable, talented and dedicated teachers I have at MYBO would encourage, challenge and congratulate me every day. They have all even written in my little yoga book that I carry around. One day Soozie read a meditation from the little book in class. And when she gave me a prayerful and powerful massage, it was pure poetry.

And then one day, I learned to breathe my way correctly into a headstand with Todd… and gott a little over confident. On day 29,  I attempted a pose on my own that I was not strong enough to sustain; worse, I got scared halfway into it. I thought I came out of it with a back flip and safe roll, but I didn't. Within hours, I couldn't turn my head to the left and was nauseous and dizzy. Tuesday, day 30, like a trooper, I did my regular class in hopes of feeling better but only felt worse.

At 80 years of age, my father retired from practicing medicine. He is 82 now and still practices yoga at least 4 times a week and he’s done so for at least 20 years. He practices and believes that massage is a necessary accompaniment to a regular practice. He takes a homeopathic and spiritual approach and always has, even before it became fashionable. So I made an appointment for a massage at MYBO. By the time I arrived I was in such discomfort that I knew in my bones it would not be wise to practice on day 31. I knew my body needed a day of rest for my neck. I sat there in the massage room and cried. REVELATION! I was crying because I couldn’t do yoga tomorrow instead of crying because I had challenged myself to go 42 days! This was an amazing turning point for me.

I laid on the table and thought about the name of the studio…Mind Your Body. So I minded mine, and let the Vital do his work. I began to focus on just being proud of myself for my 30 dedicated days. I told myself that I had done a great job and I thanked my body for carrying me though those days. I also admitted to myself that I had gotten a little carried away with my beautiful tripod headstand. I hadn’t listened to the careful direction I got from my primary instructors of the past 28 days, Soozie, Todd, and Neen. I had started getting compliments from my classmates whenever I did that tripod headstand – “taaaa-daaaa!” And I had to admit that looking at myself in the mirror had become slightly competitive. The chorus line dancer in me was coming back! Alas, these are not necessarily good yogi qualities!

And so on day 31, I just slept. When I woke up, I knew I should really get another massage. My body was tired from 30 days of hot yoga, at age 54 and after recovering from West Nile Virus. I booked a second appointment with Vital, and he was amazed at my recovery, spirit and vigor. Later, after the massage, I knew I could make it to class at 10 a.m. for day 32. And also that I could make it to a second class with Soozie.

I was thrilled when I remembered something I was told: “You may need a break, and that’s OK. Take two classes the next day and you can still meet your goal.” Writing this, it’s day 32 and I did the 10 a.m. class this morning with Todd. I feel strong, positive and peaceful. I can’t wait to be in class with Soozie again tonight. I minded my body. It needed a rest and the therapy of touch and healing care. And I am back on track to make my goal of 42 classes in 42 days!

As I write this I know I will be concluding my immersion successfully on day 42 in Todd’s Breath, Bandhas & Meditation Workshop. I’ll follow that with a congratulatory massage with Vital. On Monday I will board a plane to London. I’ve already mapped out how to maintain my practice for the 2 weeks that I will be away.

A wise teacher told me this morning, “You've just learned a great lesson. If you tighten a bow too tight and try to play it, the string will break. If you don’t tighten it enough and it is too loose, it won’t make any sound at all. There is a point that is just right, Be, and you found that.” I am so grateful for that lesson.

Why 42 days you may ask? Well, they say that doing anything for 21 consecutive days makes it a habit. I figured I needed extra reinforcement on my end – so I doubled that number. Simple as that.

It’s just the start of the journey. But I’ll just take one beautiful, enlightening, powerful day at a time.

COSTA RICA RETREAT TRAVEL REMINDER

We're counting down the days to our Costa Rica retreat! Escape the cold in March and spend a week with us enjoying the beach, the beauty of nature, and the chance to focus on you and your own wellness journey. With twice-daily yoga sessions, exclusive access to on-site spa services, and Soozie's amazing body and energy work, you'll come home refreshed and empowered.

Find out all the details about our (amazing!) location, including travel assistance from our own Amanda, in this post.

If you plan on joining us, this is a reminder to make sure you'll have a valid passport. If you need to renew your travel documents, the average wait time is currently five weeks. Even expedited passports take several weeks to renew, especially during the holiday season and early spring when lots of people are traveling. Be sure to give yourself enough time if you need to apply for a passport or renew it before heading to Costa Rica with us.

One last thing, our early bird special for pricing ends on December 31st so contact us today to lock in this VIP rate!

We love hearing from you. Get in touch with us by phone or email us at admin@mindyourbodyoasis.com to learn more about our events, or to take advantage of our special offers!
